Position Details
Position Summary
- Provides comprehensive psychological services in assigned schools
- Supports students’ academic progress, mental health, and behavior
- Works as part of a multidisciplinary team for special education and student support
- Performs assessment, counseling, consultation, and interventions in compliance with laws like IDEA and Section 504
Key Responsibilities
Assessment & Evaluation
- Conduct psychoeducational evaluations (learning, behavior, emotional functioning)
- Help determine eligibility for:
- Special education (IEP)
- 504 plans
- Analyze data and write detailed reports for teams and parents
Special Education Support
- Participate in IEP meetings and eligibility decisions
- Ensure compliance with federal and state laws (IDEA, Section 504)
- Monitor student progress and recommend services or changes
Counseling & Mental Health
- Provide:
- Individual counseling
- Small group counseling
- Address issues such as:
- Anxiety, depression
- Behavior problems
- Social/emotional development
- Offer crisis intervention when needed
Intervention & Behavior Support
- Develop and implement:
- Behavior intervention plans (BIPs)
- Academic and social-emotional interventions
- Support Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS)
- Help teachers manage classroom behavior effectively
Collaboration
- Work closely with:
- Teachers
- Parents/guardians
- Administrators
- Special education teams
- Outside agencies
- Provide consultation and training to staff on student needs
Crisis & School Support
- Respond to:
- Mental health crises
- Behavioral emergencies
- Help promote a safe, positive school climate
- Support school-wide prevention programs (behavior, bullying, mental health)
Minimum Requirements
- Graduate degree in School Psychology (Master’s + 30 hours minimum; doctorate preferred)
- Completion of a school psychology internship
- South Carolina certification as a School Psychologist
- Strong knowledge of:
- Child development
- Psychological assessment
- Special education law
