Job Description
The PCB Designer (Mid-Level) is responsible for the design and layout of complex printed circuit boards for avionics systems, operating with a high degree of independence. This role applies strong knowledge of signal integrity, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), and electrostatic discharge (ESD) principles to develop reliable, high-quality designs. The PCB Designer implements advanced design constraints, including differential pair routing, impedance control, and trace length matching, and plays a key role in supporting system integration through cross-functional collaboration. Utilizing industry-standard ECAD tools, this role contributes to design strategy, identifies opportunities for process improvement, and helps drive quality and efficiency across the PCB development lifecycle.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Design and develop complex, multi-layer PCB layouts for avionics systems, including high-speed digital, analog, RF, and power circuits.
• Apply advanced signal integrity and power integrity constraints, including differential pair routing, impedance control, controlled trace lengths, and propagation delay considerations.
• Develop and maintain electrical schematics of moderate complexity, ensuring proper component selection, connectivity, and alignment with layout and system requirements.
• Ensure compliance with EMC/EMI and ESD protection standards throughout the design lifecycle.
• Prepare and release complete fabrication and assembly documentation packages, including Gerbers, ODB++, drill files, drawings, and bills of materials (BOMs).
• Collaborate cross-functionally with electrical, mechanical, and manufacturing engineering teams to support optimal design solutions and successful system integration.
• Participate in and contribute to design reviews, including engineering, DFM, and DFA evaluations, incorporating feedback into designs.
• Support prototyping, debugging, and design iterations based on test results and production feedback.
• Maintain and enhance PCB libraries, components, and design templates within the CAD/Altium environment.
• Ensure adherence to aerospace standards, internal processes, and configuration control requirements.
• Interface with manufacturing teams, including SMT production, to support builds and help resolve design-related issues.
• Perform root cause analysis for PCB-related issues and contribute to corrective actions.
• Provide input on layout effort, timelines, and design complexity during project planning.
• Support knowledge sharing and contribute to team best practices.
• Engage with internal stakeholders on design considerations to ensure alignment with program requirements.
• Identify opportunities for process improvements and contribute to continuous improvement efforts.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
• Associate degree, PCB Design technical certification, or equivalent experience in electronics or circuit design.
• Minimum 4 years of experience in PCB layout, preferably in high-reliability or regulated environments (aerospace experience a plus).
• Working knowledge of IPC standards (e.g., IPC-2221, IPC-7351, IPC-A-600) and their application in PCB design.
• Experience applying high-speed PCB design principles, including differential pair routing, impedance control, and basic signal integrity considerations.
• Proficiency with industry-standard ECAD tools, such as Altium Designer and/or Cadence Allegro/OrCAD.
• Familiarity with rigid-flex and/or HDI PCB technologies.
• Solid understanding of PCB fabrication and assembly processes, with the ability to support manufacturing handoffs and issue resolution.
• Awareness of EMI/EMC design practices and electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection methods.
• Ability to interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and manufacturing specifications.
• Experience working within structured quality systems (e.g., AS9100 or ISO9001) preferred.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional engineering teams.
