L1 Network Ops Engineer
12 Months Contract 

Our Client is looking for an L1 Network Engineer to join its Network Operations team. The role focuses on monitoring, maintaining, and troubleshooting network infrastructure, including Aruba and Cisco switching, Check Point firewalls, and A10 load balancers.

The position also involves regular travel to data centres and client offices for on-site support, hardware maintenance, and incident resolution.

Key Responsibilities
Network Monitoring & Incident Management
  • Monitor network health, device availability, and link utilisation using NMS and alerting tools.
  • Perform first-level troubleshooting of LAN, WAN, and connectivity issues.
  • Escalate unresolved incidents to L2/L3 teams with complete diagnostic details.
  • Log, update, and close tickets in ITSM tools such as ServiceNow, Jira, or Remedy.
  • Participate in major incident bridges and provide on-site support where required.
Switching – Aruba / Cisco
  • Perform basic configurations including VLAN assignment, port enable/disable, access port configuration, and interface updates.
  • Troubleshoot port-level issues such as link flaps, speed/duplex mismatches, errors, and PoE problems.
  • Check MAC address tables, ARP entries, 802.1X, and interface status to isolate connectivity issues.
  • Support switch replacements, IOS/firmware upgrades, and configuration backups under L2 guidance.
Firewall – Check Point
  • Monitor firewall health, cluster status, and logs using SmartConsole / SmartView.
  • Analyse logs to identify blocked traffic and support connectivity troubleshooting.
  • Assist L2 teams with policy installation, rule validation, and VPN tunnel checks.
  • Raise and track change requests for firewall rule creation, modification, and removal.
Load Balancer – A10
  • Monitor virtual servers, service groups, and real server health.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting of server health-check failures.
  • Enable/disable real servers during maintenance windows.
  • Assist with SSL certificate expiry tracking and escalate issues to L2 teams.
Data Centre & On-Site Support
  • Travel to data centres and client offices for device installation, rack and stack, cabling, tracing, patching, and hardware replacement.
  • Perform physical checks on equipment, including LEDs, power supplies, cables, and labelling.
  • Coordinate with vendors, ISPs, and data centre teams for circuit issues, hardware delivery, and remote-hands activities.
Change Management & Maintenance
  • Execute pre-approved and standard changes during maintenance windows.
  • Perform pre- and post-change checks and document results.
  • Conduct scheduled configuration backups of network devices.
Documentation & Reporting
  • Maintain accurate network documentation, including diagrams, IP records, rack layouts, device information, and cabling details.
  • Create and update SOPs and knowledge base articles.
  • Prepare daily and weekly network health and incident reports.
Requirements
  • Diploma or Bachelor's degree in IT, Computer Science, Electronics, or a related discipline.
  • 1–3 years of experience in network operations or a NOC environment.
  • Hands-on experience with Aruba and/or Cisco switches, including CLI and GUI.
  • Working knowledge of Check Point firewalls, including SmartConsole, logs, and basic policy concepts.
  • Basic understanding of A10 load balancers or similar ADC platforms such as F5 or Citrix NetScaler.
  • Good understanding of networking fundamentals, including:
    • OSI / TCP-IP
    • VLANs and 802.1X
    • STP
    • Subnetting
    • Basic routing, including Static, OSPF and BGP
    • DHCP, DNS and NAT
  • Familiarity with troubleshooting tools such as Ping, Traceroute, and Wireshark.
  • Experience using ITSM ticketing systems and working within SLA-driven environments.
Preferred Certifications
  • CCNA
  • Aruba Certified Switching Associate (ACSA)
  • CCSA – Check Point Certified Security Administrator
  • ITIL Foundation

Additional Requirements
  • Willingness to travel regularly to multiple data centres and client sites.
  • Flexibility to work rotational shifts, weekends, and on-call duties based on operational requirements.
