The SFPA is seeking a Senior Port Officer  to join its established team in Howth and play a key role within the Authority,

The Senior Port Officer plays a key leadership role in ensuring the effective delivery of SFPA’s sea-fisheries control and food safety functions at port level. Based in Howth, the role carries significant responsibility for operational management, regulatory compliance, data integrity and the delivery of SFPA’s statutory objectives.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will take a lead role in:

• The day-to-day operational management and coordination of local Operational matters.

• The efficient and effective performance of the Authority’s Sea-Fisheries Operations programme (Fisheries Control and Food Safety) objectives and outputs within the terms of the Authority’s Strategy and Annual Business Plan.

• To be accountable for, manage and oversee the efficient and effective collection of fish catch and fishing effort statistics for quota, effort management and policy purposes.

• Reporting to and advising the Authority on operational matters and the delivery of SFPA’s objectives.

• The implementation of all relevant EU and National legislation in relation to Food Safety and Fisheries Control and Conservation.

• The collection, collation and checking of all fish catch statistics including data gathered from EU fishing logbooks, sales notes and other data sources.

• Ensuring that the contractual commitments and responsibilities of the SFPA to the Food Safety Authority of Ireland are met and delivered.

• Supporting the EU missions on Fisheries Conservation and Control and Food Safety in your area.

• Enforcing all relevant present and future EU and National legislation in relation to Food Safety and Fisheries Control and 

Conservation.

• Acting as an authorised officer for the purposes of exercising all the powers available to authorised officers under the Food Safety Authority of Ireland Act 1998.

About the Ideal Candidate

Essential Criteria

• Minimum qualification of a National Diploma level 7 in a relevant discipline (e.g. fisheries technology, engineering, science, geography, legal, financial).

• 2 years relevant experience as a Sea Fisheries Protection Officer/ Sea Fishery Officer.

• Proven leadership and motivation skills together with the ability to allocate work to team members, set performance standards, evaluate work outputs from the team and address any issues of underperformance arising in relation to staff 

reporting directly to you.

• Strong management capability particularly in relation to managing and monitoring the delivery of the Authority’s key business objectives and regulatory responsibilities in the areas of Sea Fisheries Operations.

• Possess good communication skills particularly to act as a communicator between staff and management, keeping both well informed and up to date. 

• Proven capabilities to master, manage, and deliver a complex range of specialised technical programmes and legal issues.

• Possess good administrative capabilities, including effective report writing, work programming/planning, budget management and the use of Information Technology as a communications and monitoring tool. 

• Travel nationally and some international travel is an essential requirement of the role.

• Must hold and maintain a clean driving licence.
