About the Role
A leading public-sector technology organisation is looking for a hands-on Engineering Manager to lead a small infrastructure and platform engineering team behind mission-critical government systems. This is a player-coach role — you'll set technical direction for a focused scope, stay close to the tools, and keep a critical platform secure, stable and continuously improving. It's ideal for someone who leads by doing, enjoys operational excellence over greenfield empire-building, and wants their work to matter at national scale.
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Own the technical direction for a defined set of infrastructure and platform services, setting the bar for reliability, security and compliance.
  • Establish DevOps/SRE and secure-by-design baselines, and keep the team delivering against them.
  • Stay hands-on — run design reviews, chip away at tech debt, and ship improvements (automation, tooling, refactors) alongside your engineers.
  • Balance new work with business-as-usual — fixes, maintenance and stability — so the platform stays dependable.
  • Modernise the estate through infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD and observability, while strengthening change management, resilience and disaster recovery.
  • Work within the organisation's engineering standards and practice rather than reinventing them; mentor engineers and surface learnings to senior leadership.
  • Guide the team's responsible adoption of AI-assisted development.
 
What We're Looking For
Essential
  • Proven experience leading or managing an infrastructure or platform engineering team while staying technically hands-on.
  • Familiarity with government or highly regulated IT environments.
  • Strong grasp of security principles, risk management and compliance frameworks.
  • Comfortable with change/service management practices (ITIL or similar).
  • A clear communicator who can translate technical issues for non-technical stakeholders.
Desirable
  • Infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Ansible), DevSecOps, and CI/CD pipeline ownership.
  • Cloud certifications (AWS/Azure), ITIL 4 or equivalent.
  • Exposure to public-sector procurement, vendor management, and business-continuity/DR planning.
