Position Summary

The Material Manager is responsible for leading all activities related to material planning, inventory control, warehousing, and inbound/outbound logistics to ensure uninterrupted production operations. This role oversees the flow of materials from suppliers to the production floor, optimizes inventory levels, and drives efficiency, accuracy, and cost control across the end to end materials function.

Key Responsibilities

Material Planning & Inventory Management

  • Develop, execute, and optimize material planning strategies to support production schedules and customer demand.
  • Maintain accurate inventory levels, safety stock, and reorder points to prevent shortages or excess.
  • Monitor daily material availability and act quickly to resolve discrepancies or supply interruptions.
  • Ensure timely and accurate cycle counts, inventory reconciliations, and rootcause analysis for variances.

 

Supplier & Procurement

  • Collaborate closely with Procurement on supplier performance, on-time delivery, lead times, and material quality.
  • Escalate supply issues and partner with sourcing teams to develop recovery plans and alternative solutions.
  • Support negotiations and cost-reduction initiatives by providing data on material usage, waste, and supplier performance.

 

Warehouse & Logistics Operations

  • Oversee receiving, storage, picking, and delivery of materials to production lines.
  • Ensure warehouse layout, 5S, and material flow processes maximize space utilization and efficiency.
  • Manage inbound/outbound logistics, freight optimization, and shipping accuracy.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards, DOT requirements, and company policies.

 

Production Support & Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Align closely with Production Operations to ensure material readiness for daily, weekly, and monthly schedules.
  • Lead daily tier meetings to discuss inventory risks, backorders, and material availability.
  • Collaborate with Quality, Engineering, and Finance on product changes, material disposition, and cost impacts.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives (Lean, Kaizen, Kanban, VMI, etc.).

 

  

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead, coach, and develop a high performing materials team including planners, buyers, warehouse associates, and material handlers.
  • Establish clear goals, metrics, and expectations aligned with plant objectives.
  • Recruit, train, and evaluate staff performance while fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.

  • Inventory accuracy (target: 95–99%)
  • On-time production material availability
  • Inventory turns
  • Supplier on-time delivery (OTD)
  • Backorder / shortage rate
  • Freight cost and logistics efficiency
  • Warehouse productivity and accuracy

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Operations Management, Business, Engineering, or a related field (preferred).
  • 5–8 years of experience in materials management, planning, or supply chain in a manufacturing environment.
  • 3+ years of supervisory or leadership experience.
  • Strong understanding of MRP/ERP systems (SAP, Oracle, JD Edwards, etc.).
  • Expertise in inventory management principles and material flow optimization.
  • Solid knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Kanban, and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communication and crossfunctional leadership skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.
