Enterprise Systems & Infrastructure Engineer

Contract | Inside IR35
Location: Sunderland – 1 Day per Week Onsite | Fully Remote Considered

We’re partnering with a growing technology-led organisation to appoint an experienced Enterprise Systems & Infrastructure Engineer.

This is a senior, hands-on infrastructure role for someone with strong experience across enterprise networking, cloud infrastructure, identity and access management, Microsoft 365 and security-focused SaaS environments.

You’ll play a key role in designing, implementing and managing resilient enterprise systems, helping ensure infrastructure remains secure, scalable and highly available while supporting a positive end-user experience across the wider business.

The Opportunity

As Enterprise Systems & Infrastructure Engineer, you’ll take ownership of a broad range of enterprise infrastructure technologies spanning AWS, on-premise systems, enterprise networking, identity platforms and Microsoft cloud services.
You’ll lead the architecture and deployment of infrastructure solutions, provide escalation support for complex technical issues and help improve the reliability, security and performance of the wider technology estate.

Key Responsibilities

You’ll play a key role in supporting and developing enterprise infrastructure by:
  • Leading the architecture and deployment of enterprise networks, cloud infrastructure and on-premise solutions.
  • Managing office and data-centre network infrastructure, including switches, firewalls, LAN/WAN and wireless technologies.
  • Supporting and administering AWS environments, including core services such as EC2 and S3.
  • Managing identity and access-management platforms including Okta, ensuring secure authentication and effective access controls.
  • Supporting collaboration and endpoint-management platforms including Microsoft 365, Intune and Security & Compliance.
  • Providing escalation support for complex infrastructure issues and helping maintain high levels of system availability.
  • Managing enterprise networking technologies including VPNs, routing and BGP.
  • Administering firewalls, including FortiGate environments.
  • Supporting Active Directory and virtualisation technologies including VMware and Hyper-V.
  • Managing SAN and enterprise storage solutions.
  • Driving process improvements through automation, monitoring and performance optimisation.
  • Using PowerShell to automate infrastructure and operational tasks.
  • Supporting disaster recovery, backup strategies and infrastructure lifecycle management.
  • Mentoring junior engineers and providing technical guidance across the wider team.
  • Collaborating with internal teams to deliver complex enterprise infrastructure initiatives.
  • Ensuring infrastructure solutions are designed with security, stability and performance in mind.

About You

You’ll be an experienced Infrastructure Engineer or senior 3rd Line Support professional with a strong background working across large-scale enterprise environments.
You will also have:
  • 5+ years’ experience in Infrastructure Engineering, or equivalent senior 3rd Line Support experience.
  • Strong knowledge of enterprise networking technologies.
  • Deep experience with Active Directory.
  • Strong knowledge of VMware and/or Hyper-V.
  • Experience managing SAN and enterprise storage solutions.
  • Strong knowledge of AWS, including EC2, S3 and hybrid infrastructure.
  • Experience supporting cloud and on-premise environments.
  • Strong firewall administration experience, ideally with FortiGate.
  • Experience with VPNs, BGP and network security.
  • Advanced Microsoft 365 and Intune experience.
  • Strong knowledge of endpoint management and security tooling.
  • Hands-on experience using PowerShell for scripting and automation.
  • Proven experience managing complex infrastructure projects.
  • A strong focus on system stability, security and performance.
  • Excellent troubleshooting, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to work effectively across technical and non-technical teams.

Desirable Experience

It would be advantageous if you also have:
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure or other cloud platforms.
  • Knowledge of Data Loss Prevention (DLP) technologies.
  • Experience with SIEM solutions.
  • Strong understanding of disaster-recovery best practices across cloud and SaaS environments.
  • Relevant professional certifications across Cisco, Fortinet, AWS or Microsoft technologies.
