Data Integration & Metadata Specialist
Position Summary
The Data Integration & Metadata Specialist will be responsible for the design, development, implementation, validation, and maintenance of metadata ingestion, reconciliation, and integration workflows supporting computational pathology, digital pathology, and translational research initiatives. This role serves as a critical bridge between laboratory operations, image analysis platforms, enterprise data systems, and downstream analytics environments by ensuring that image data and associated metadata are accurately captured, standardized, traceable, and accessible throughout the data lifecycle.
The successful candidate will support the development of automated and semi-automated workflows that integrate pathology images, sample metadata, laboratory information, and analytical outputs into enterprise Image Management Systems and scientific data repositories. This individual will work closely with computational scientists, pathologists, data engineers, laboratory personnel, bioinformaticians, and IT teams to establish scalable data integration processes that support biomarker discovery, digital pathology workflows, and regulatory-compliant research activities.
The role requires expertise in metadata management, ETL development, database systems, API integration, data quality assurance, and scientific data governance within pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or life sciences environments. Key Responsibilities
Metadata Management & Reconciliation
  • Design, implement, and maintain metadata management processes supporting computational pathology and digital pathology workflows.
  • Develop metadata mapping standards and data dictionaries for pathology images, laboratory data, and analytical outputs.
  • Perform metadata reconciliation activities across multiple source systems to ensure data consistency and integrity.
  • Establish metadata quality controls and validation procedures to identify discrepancies and data anomalies.
  • Support metadata harmonization initiatives across laboratory, imaging, and enterprise systems.
  • Ensure traceability and lineage of image-derived data throughout the research lifecycle.
Data Integration & Workflow Development
  • Design and develop automated and semi-automated metadata ingestion workflows into enterprise Image Management Systems.
  • Build and maintain ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes supporting scientific data integration.
  • Integrate pathology image metadata, laboratory data, sample information, and analytical outputs into centralized repositories.
  • Develop scalable workflows that support high-volume image and metadata processing.
  • Collaborate with scientific and technical teams to define integration requirements and system interfaces.
  • Optimize data pipelines to improve efficiency, accuracy, and reliability.
Image Management System Support
  • Support integration and maintenance of metadata workflows within digital pathology and image management platforms.
  • Ensure image metadata is accurately associated with tissue samples, study identifiers, biomarker data, and analysis results.
  • Collaborate with computational pathology teams to facilitate downstream image analysis activities.
  • Support deployment and testing of metadata ingestion solutions.
  • Troubleshoot issues related to image management systems and metadata synchronization.
Database Administration & Data Architecture
  • Develop and maintain database structures supporting metadata storage and retrieval.
  • Create and optimize database queries, stored procedures, and reporting mechanisms.
  • Ensure database performance, integrity, and scalability.
  • Support structured and unstructured data management initiatives.
  • Assist in development of data models supporting digital pathology and translational research workflows.
  • Collaborate with enterprise data management teams on architecture and governance initiatives.
API Development & System Integration
  • Develop and support API-based integrations between laboratory systems, image management platforms, and analytical environments.
  • Configure and maintain interfaces connecting:
    • Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)
    • Image Management Systems (IMS)
    • Digital pathology platforms
    • Data repositories
    • Analytics environments
  • Troubleshoot integration issues and coordinate resolution efforts across technical teams.
  • Support validation and deployment of system enhancements and upgrades.
Data Quality & Validation
  • Develop data validation protocols and quality assurance procedures.
  • Perform audits of metadata and integrated datasets to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  • Investigate data discrepancies and implement corrective actions.
  • Monitor workflow performance and establish metrics for data quality.
  • Support validation activities for metadata ingestion workflows and system integrations.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational data governance standards and Good Documentation Practices (GDP).
Scientific Data Governance
  • Support implementation of data governance frameworks for pathology and imaging datasets.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and technical documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with data integrity principles, traceability requirements, and organizational policies.
  • Participate in governance reviews, audits, and quality assessments.
  • Assist in development of standards for metadata capture, storage, and management.

Required
Bachelor's degree in one of the following disciplines:
