Controls / PLC Engineer — Major Materials Handling Infrastructure Project

Employer: A global leader in automated logistics and materials handling systems
Location: Western Sydney (on-site during project phases)
Project: Large-scale automated materials handling systems as part of a major infrastructure development

About the Role Our client, a global leader in automated logistics and materials handling systems, is looking for a Controls/PLC Engineer to join the team delivering critical automation systems for a major infrastructure project in Western Sydney. This is a rare opportunity to work on one of the region's most significant infrastructure builds, with long-term career runway as the project moves from installation through commissioning and into live operations.

You'll be responsible for the design, programming, testing, and commissioning of PLC-based control systems that drive automated baggage handling — critical, high-availability systems where reliability and safety are non-negotiable.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and commission PLC and SCADA control systems for large-scale automated materials handling equipment
  • Program and configure using Siemens PLC platforms (S7, TIA Portal, WinCC or equivalent)
  • Support system integration, testing, and commissioning across a major site's automated handling infrastructure
  • Troubleshoot and resolve control system faults during commissioning and post-handover support phases
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and project engineering teams to ensure systems meet performance and safety requirements
  • Produce and maintain technical documentation, including control philosophies, I/O lists, and functional specifications
  • Support continuous improvement and reliability initiatives as the system transitions into live operation
About You
  • Degree qualified in Electrical, Electronic, Mechatronic, or Controls Engineering (or equivalent trade + experience pathway)
  • Proven hands-on experience with Siemens PLC programming (S7-300/400/1500, TIA Portal) — essential
  • Experience with SCADA/HMI systems (WinCC or similar)
  • Background in materials handling, conveyor systems, or large-scale automated logistics systems highly regarded
  • Comfortable working on a live, high-profile infrastructure project with strict safety and quality standards
  • Strong fault-finding and commissioning experience — able to work through complex control system issues under pressure
  • Excellent communication skills, able to liaise across engineering, project management, and client stakeholders
Why Apply
  • Be part of the team delivering critical automation systems for a brand-new, large-scale infrastructure project — genuine legacy project experience
  • Work with a global benchmark name in automated logistics and materials handling
  • Long-term career pathway as the project moves from delivery into ongoing operations and support
  • Exposure to large-scale Siemens-based automation systems, sought after across major logistics and infrastructure projects globally
