Commercial Manager - Business Unit Finance

Our client is a leading Australian industrial services and equipment solutions organisation, supporting customers across infrastructure, construction, mining and resources, manufacturing, engineering and government. With a substantial national footprint, a large and diverse asset base, and approximately 2,000 employees, the organisation provides equipment hire, technical expertise and specialist solutions across complex operating environments. Its broader capability spans engineering, industrial services, power and HVAC solutions, positioning it as a key partner to major organisations delivering critical projects and infrastructure across Australia.

Today they are seeking to appoint a Commercial Manager - Business Unit  Finance.  This is a senior, hands-on commercial partnering role with dual reporting to the Chief Financial Officer and EGM - Queensland, while also partnering closely with the broader operational leadership team. As an individual contributor, supported by the national finance team, your impact will come through your commercial credibility, analytical capability, financial expertise and ability to influence senior decision-makers.

You will be expected to get close to the business - developing a strong understanding of operational activity, performance drivers and commercial challenges, and translating these into meaningful financial insight that supports better decision-making and improved business performance.

What You’ll Be Accountable For

• Lead Business Unit month-end, P&L review, analysis and commentary.
• Deliver accurate and commercially meaningful financial reporting.
• Analyse performance across business unit, regional and site levels.
• Identify trends, risks and opportunities to improve performance.
• Lead budgeting and forecasting and challenge underlying assumptions.
• Maintain strong financial governance, controls and compliance.
• Partner with leaders across cost, pricing, productivity, utilisation and revenue.
• Support capital allocation and investment decisions.
• Assess the financial and commercial impact of improvement initiatives.
• Translate complex financial information into practical business actions.
• Improve financial capability and accountability across operational teams.
• Act as a key link between the business and corporate finance.

• a reputation as a trusted and objective commercial advisor; and
• a track record of accurate, high-quality and timely delivery.

You will move beyond explaining what happened to identifying why it happened, what is likely to happen next and what action is required.

About You:
You are likely an experienced Commercial Manager, Senior Finance Business Partner or commercially focused Finance Manager from a substantial, operationally complex  and multi-site organisation.  Experience within equipment hire, construction materials, industrial services, transport and logistics, distribution, waste, manufacturing or other asset-intensive environments will be highly regarded.

You will bring:

• Tertiary qualifications and CA or CPA accreditation.
• 5+ years’ commercial finance, business partnering or finance management experience.
• Strong reporting, budgeting, forecasting and analytical capability.
• The ability to interrogate a P&L and understand operational cost drivers.
• Strong commercial judgement and understanding of return on capital.
• Experience supporting productivity and business improvement initiatives.
• Experience within geographically dispersed or multi-site businesses.
• The ability to influence senior stakeholders without direct authority.

Importantly, you must enjoy being hands-on. This is a senior role requiring someone equally comfortable influencing executives and working directly with the underlying financial detail.
