Job Description
  • We are seeking an experienced Snowflake Platform Engineer (contractor) to support our Platform team.
  • This role will be responsible for improving the security, governance, operational maturity, and cost efficiency of our enterprise Snowflake environment while providing day-to-day operational support.
  • The ideal candidate will bring deep Snowflake expertise and a hands-on approach to platform administration, governance, security, automation, and operational excellence.
  • This individual will work closely with Data Engineering, Analytics Engineering, Platform Services, Security, and governance teams to optimize our Snowflake ecosystem and support ongoing modernization initiatives.
  • This position requires a balance of strategic thinking and tactical execution, with the flexibility to address operational issues, troubleshoot production challenges, and respond to evolving business priorities.
Key Responsibilities
Snowflake Security & Access Modernization
  • Assess, simplify and standardize role-based access control (RBAC) models.
  • Review security practices and recommend improvements that align with enterprise governance requirements.
  • Evaluate, recommend, and implement Snowflake capabilities that strengthen data access governance, improve security monitoring, and reduce the risk of unauthorized access.
Authentication & Service Account Transformation
  • Establish operational standards and governance processes for service account lifecycle management.
Platform Governance & Operational Excellence
  • Design and implement governance processes for newly released Snowflake capabilities and services.
  • Develop operational controls, standards, and review processes to support platform scalability and compliance.
  • Establish best practices for platform administration, change management, monitoring, and support.
Snowflake Release & Feature Management
  • Monitor Snowflake product releases and roadmap updates.
  • Review monthly release notes and assess impacts to existing environments, integrations, and operational processes.
  • Evaluate emerging capabilities and recommend adoption strategies based on business value, risk, and operational readiness.
  • Create implementation recommendations and rollout plans for approved features.
Platform Assessments & Knowledge Transfer
  • Conduct comprehensive reviews of Snowflake architecture, security, performance, governance, and operational processes.
  • Identify improvement opportunities and develop actionable remediation plans.
  • Provide mentoring, documentation, and knowledge transfer sessions for Platform Services team.
  • Develop operational readiness assessments and maturity improvement roadmaps.
Documentation & Runbook Development
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, operational procedures, architecture diagrams, and support runbooks.
  • Improve platform documentation to support incident response, onboarding, disaster recovery, and ongoing operations.
  • Establish documentation standards and processes for continuous maintenance.
Technical Debt Reduction
  • Partner with cross-functional engineering teams to drive remediation efforts, advance modernization initiatives, and improve platform maintainability through technical debt reduction.
Cost Optimization & Storage Management
  • Conduct ongoing reviews of Snowflake consumption, storage utilization, and overall platform costs.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to optimize compute, storage, and workload efficiency.
  • Develop recommendations and governance controls for cost management and capacity planning.
  • Establish monitoring and reporting processes for platform consumption trends.
Data Lifecycle & Retention Management
  • Develop and implement enterprise data retention and archival strategies within Snowflake.
  • Reduce operational risk and storage costs associated with outdated or inactive data.
  • Implement lifecycle management processes and supporting governance controls.
Operational Support
  • Provide hands-on support for day-to-day Snowflake platform operations.
  • Troubleshoot incidents, resolve production issues, and participate in platform support activities.
  • Support platform upgrades, configuration changes, and operational maintenance activities.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure platform reliability and availability.
Required Qualifications
  • 7+ years of experience in data platform engineering or database administration.
  • 4+ years of hands-on Snowflake platform administration and architecture experience.
  • 4+ years of hands on experience with CI/CD processes.
  • Experience developing operational processes, support models, and technical documentation.
  • Strong understanding of enterprise data management practices.
  • Experience supporting production environments in large-scale organizations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting healthcare, regulated, or highly governed environments.
  • Experience with AWS/Azure ecosystem services and enterprise data platforms.
  • Familiarity with modern data architectures involving Snowflake, dbt, Airflow, Power BI, Posit Connect, GitHub, Terraform etc.,
  • Experience with data lifecycle management, archival strategies, and retention governance.
  • Experience implementing data access monitoring and security controls.
  • Snowflake certifications preferred.
