Position Description

Charles River School is a unique, inclusive independent PreK-8 school in Dover, MA, 16 miles west of Boston. CRS nurtures each student by igniting curiosity, encouraging creativity, and cultivating intellectual engagement. We are seeking a warm, energetic librarian to cover a leave of absence from early December through April. The Long Term Substitute Librarian will welcome our Otters into a library where every child can find themselves in a book, and will help keep the library a vibrant, well-run part of daily life at CRS.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and teach library classes for students in PreK through Grade 6
  • Foster a love of reading through read-alouds, book talks, and readers’ advisory tailored to each child’s age and interests
  • Teach information literacy skills in developmentally appropriate ways
  • Support middle school students in using the library for book checkout and research
  • Manage circulation, shelving, and the day-to-day organization of the library
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers and specialists to connect library time with classroom learning
  • Provide recess and lunch coverage as part of our shared supervision schedule

Essential Skills and Qualifications

  • Experience working with children in a school or library setting preferred
  • Knowledge of children’s and young adult literature across the PreK-8 range
  • Deep knowledge of child development and a warm, positive approach to guiding students (familiarity with Responsive Classroom a plus)
  • Demonstrated commitment to community, equity, and inclusion in instructional practice and pedagogical approach
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Bachelor’s degree required; library science degree or Massachusetts library license preferred but not required

Position Details

  • Approximately early December 2026 through April 2027 (exact dates to be confirmed)
  • Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-3:30 PM
  • This is a temporary, non-benefited position
  • Compensation range for this role is $18k-24k for four months Nov 30-April 1, commensurate with experience; there are no benefits available with this position
