Apply directFor the HR Business Partner Who Wants a Genuine Seat at the Table
This isn't a role where you'll be managing a small, quiet client group. You'll be the trusted HR partner for the firm's biggest team by headcount, across five states, with genuinely sophisticated, demanding clients and a bench of senior partners who expect substance, not just process.
The Firm
An independent Australian law firm with a national footprint and a clear strategy for where it's headed. People and development sits close to the business here, not bolted onto it, and the firm backs that with genuine investment: standout parental leave provisions, a real hybrid model, and a P&D team that operates nationally rather than in silos.
The Timing
12 months with the scope to make a real mark on a defined client group across the full employee lifecycle, from coaching and capability through to policy and workforce planning.
The Work Itself
You'll be the primary HR contact for this group, working closely with partners rather than at a distance. One day might mean coaching a partner through a difficult conversation with a senior associate, the next preparing workforce insights for a practice group meeting, or working through an employee relations issue that needs judgement rather than a policy reference. With no direct reports, the role is built around the relationships you form rather than a reporting line.
Where You'll Land
Hybrid and flexible for the length of the contract. A genuinely national P&D function behind you, an experienced Business Partner Lead to escalate to when it counts, and specialist colleagues in talent, learning, and D&I so you're never solving everything solo.
Sound Like You?
If you've got the seniority to sit across from senior partners and hold your ground, plus the generalist range to move between coaching, ER, and workforce planning without missing a beat, this is worth a conversation. Ideally you've worked in a legal or professional services environment, and you're comfortable being the sole HR presence for a large, complex group rather than one of many.
