Position Overview
The Special Education Behavior Support Classroom Teacher provides specialized instruction and behavioral interventions for students with significant emotional and behavioral needs that impact their ability to function in a general education setting.
This role is typically in a behavior support or emotional support classroom, designed to deliver structured, individualized instruction and intensive behavioral support. The program emphasizes self-regulation, emotional development, and positive behavior change.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with behavioral and emotional needs
- Provide direct instruction in:
- Academic content (adapted as needed)
- Social-emotional learning (SEL)
- Self-regulation and coping skills
- Adapt curriculum and instruction to meet diverse academic and behavioral needs
- Deliver core and supplemental instruction within a structured classroom environment [
Behavior Intervention & Management
- Develop and implement Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) based on student needs
- Conduct or support functional behavior assessments (FBAs) to identify behavior triggers
- Use evidence-based strategies such as:
- Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS)
- Trauma-informed practices
- Reinforcement systems and structured routines
- Teach replacement behaviors and social skills to reduce challenging behaviors
- Provide crisis intervention and de-escalation when necessary
Behavior support teachers focus on teaching appropriate behaviors and implementing targeted interventions to improve student outcomes
Classroom & Instructional Duties
- Manage a self-contained or behavior support classroom with small student groups
- Create a safe, structured, and predictable environment
- Establish clear expectations, routines, and behavior systems
- Provide one-on-one and small-group instruction
- Supervise and guide paraprofessionals or support staff
Assessment & Progress Monitoring
- Track academic and behavioral progress using data collection tools
- Monitor student progress toward IEP and BIP goals
- Maintain detailed documentation for compliance (IDEA requirements)
- Adjust instructional and behavioral strategies based on student data
Collaboration & Communication
- Collaborate with:
- General education teachers
- Behavior specialists and school psychologists
- Counselors, therapists, and administrators
- Families and caregivers
- Participate in IEP meetings and multidisciplinary planning
- Communicate regularly with parents regarding progress and behavior
Special education teachers collaborate with teams and use data to guide instruction and support student development.

Behavior support classrooms are designed to help students build emotional regulation, social skills, and academic success through structured interventions
Work Environment
- Self-contained behavior support classroom or specialized program
- Small class size with paraprofessional support
- Structured schedule aligned with school hours (e.g., ~7:00 AM–3:00 PM)
- Full-time, 190-day school year position
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or related field
- Valid South Carolina Special Education teaching certification
- Strong knowledge of behavior management and intervention strategies
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with students with behavioral or emotional disorders
- Training in:
- PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports)
- ABA or behavior analysis
- Trauma-informed teaching practices
