Track Protection Officer (TPO)

Through Rio Tinto's partnership with Chandler Macleod, we are seeking an experienced Track Protection Officer (TPO) to support ballast cleaning operations across the Rio Tinto Rail Network.
This is a great opportunity to join a safety-focused team working on site with Rio Tinto. You'll work alongside experienced crews, supporting day-to-day operations while contributing to safe and reliable outcomes.
Reporting to the Rail Supervisor / Superintendent, your responsibilities will include:
• Prepare, verify and implement Track Protection Plans and work-on-track authority requirements
• Confirm worksite limits, access points, safe places, adjacent line risks and protection requirements prior to starting
• Establish, maintain and remove field protection controls in accordance with approved safeworking requirements
• Conduct pre-start and safeworking briefings, including sign-on processes, hazards and emergency arrangements
• Coordinate with Train Control, supervisors, PPOs, maintainers, contractors and ballast cleaning crews to ensure safe work execution
• Monitor and respond to changing site conditions including rail traffic exposure, machine movements, fatigue, weather and scope changes
• Exercise the authority to stop work and escalate concerns immediately where protection, communication, authority or behaviours are unsafe/non-compliant
• Complete all required documentation, handovers, authority cancellations and close-out records within required timeframes
About You
• Demonstrated experience as a Track Protection Officer / Protection Officer / Safeworking professionalwithin rail maintenance or possession environments
• Experience working in heavy haul railand/or major maintenance campaigns (ballast cleaning, tamping, rail grinding, renewals or track machine operations highly regarded)
• Current Track Protection Officer competency (network relevant) and strong knowledge of safeworking systems, permits and protection authorities
• Happy to work a varied roster (12/9 and 2/2) with a mix of days and nights
• Valid Australian C-Class Driver’s Licence
• Strong teamwork and communication skills
• Dedication to everyone’s safety, including confidence to challenge unsafe work and stop the job when required
• Ability to pass pre-employment medical and other testing, and meet Rio Tinto onboarding, site access and VOC requirements
