  • Position Details

    The ASL Educational Interpreter provides communication access for students who are deaf or hard of hearing by interpreting spoken language into American Sign Language (ASL) and vice versa. The interpreter works within classroom and school environments to support student learning, inclusion, and participation, while collaborating with teachers and special education staff.

    The role is typically full-time (190-day school year) with hours aligned to the school schedule.

    Key Responsibilities

    1. Interpret spoken instruction, discussions, and school activities into ASL for students
    2. Translate student responses from ASL into spoken English for teachers and peers
    3. Provide interpretation across settings, including:
    4. Classroom lessons
    5. Assemblies and school events
    6. Meetings and conferences
    7. Facilitate effective communication between students, teachers, peers, and staff
    8. Review lesson plans, textbooks, and materials in advance to ensure accurate interpretation
    9. Modify interpreting techniques based on the student’s communication level and needs
    10. Assist with Individualized Education Program (IEP) implementation and attend IEP meetings
    11. Support students with:
    12. Academic understanding
    13. Vocabulary development
    14. Social interaction and communication skills
    15. Maintain accurate conveyance of message content, tone, and intent during interpretation
    16. Collaborate with teachers and special education teams to support student progress
    17. Promote an inclusive learning environment for deaf and hard-of-hearing students
    18. Maintain strict confidentiality and ethical standards

    Work Environment

    1. Elementary, middle, or high school settings
    2. Classroom-based with potential support during extracurricular activities
    3. Work schedule typically follows school hours (e.g., 7:30 AM–3:00 PM)

    Minimum Qualifications

    1. Associate’s degree or completion of a sign language interpreter training program
    2. Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken English
    3. Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA score ~3.2–3.5 or higher)
    4. Experience working with students who are deaf or hard of hearing (preferred)

    Preferred Qualifications

    1. Bachelor’s degree
    2. National certification (RID – Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf)
    3. Prior experience in a school or educational setting
    4. Knowledge of deaf culture and language development

    Skills & Competencies

    1. Strong receptive and expressive ASL interpreting skills
    2. Ability to interpret accurately in real time
    3. Knowledge of educational terminology and curriculum
    4. Collaboration and communication skills
