Hawkesbury City Council is seeking an Environmental Compliance Coordinator to lead and coordinate its Environmental Health and Compliance functions within the Regulatory Services branch.

This is a strong opportunity for an experienced local government professional who wants to step into a broad leadership role with real scope to improve systems, guide a team and shape how compliance services are delivered.

Following a recent team realignment, Council has brought together its Environmental Health and Compliance teams under one Coordinator. The role will suit someone who enjoys variety, takes ownership and is motivated by building structure, improving processes and helping people perform at their best.

The Opportunity

This is not a narrow technical role or a purely business-as-usual position.

You will play a key role in leading day-to-day operations across environmental health, environmental protection, development compliance, investigations, public health programs and enforcement activity.

A major focus will be helping the team continue to mature its investigation capability, improve consistency and strengthen procedures across the branch. Council is also commencing a significant compliance manual project, which will help map and improve investigation processes over the next two to three years.

You will also provide oversight of development application referrals from a regulatory perspective, support complaint investigations, guide officers through evidence gathering and enforcement processes, and ensure matters are managed consistently and professionally.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and coordinate the Environmental Health and Compliance teams
  • Support and oversee investigations into environmental, planning and public health matters
  • Provide guidance on notices, orders, infringements, evidence briefs and court-related matters
  • Support the delivery of public health and proactive inspection programs
  • Provide regulatory input into development applications and related matters
  • Coach, mentor and develop team members
  • Improve procedures, systems and consistency across compliance and investigation work
  • Respond to complex customer, Councillor, Ministerial and Ombudsman matters
  • Work closely with the Manager Regulatory Services and the wider City Planning leadership team
About You

You may already be a Coordinator, Team Leader or Senior Officer ready for the next step.

Council is open to candidates coming from either an Environmental Health or Development / Environmental Compliance background. You do not need to have done every part of the role before, but you will need strong local government regulatory experience, good judgement and the ability to lead others.

You will bring:
  • Experience in environmental health, environmental compliance, development compliance, regulatory services or a closely related field.
  • Working knowledge of relevant NSW legislation, such as the Protection of the Environment Operations Act, Environmental Planning and Assessment Act, Local Government Act, Food Act and/or Public Health Act.
  • Experience supporting or leading investigations, enforcement action, notices, orders or evidence preparation.
  • The ability to lead, coach and guide a team through change.
  • Strong communication, conflict management and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • A practical, process-minded approach to improving service delivery.
  • A relevant qualification in Environmental Health, Environmental Science, Local Government Law, Town Planning or equivalent experience.
  • A current Class C driver licence.
This role could suit an experienced senior technical officer who has acted in leadership roles and is ready to step up, provided you have the maturity, initiative and confidence to guide a team.
