A growing charter school organization serving underserved student populations across California is seeking a senior-level HR expert to support its people operations on a fractional basis.
Role Overview
This is a strategic, advisory-focused HR consulting role. The Fractional HR Compliance & Employee Relations Consultant will serve as a subject matter expert supporting leadership and the internal HR team in handling complex employee relations matters, workplace investigations, and compliance risks.
Core duties
Lead and advise on employee relations issues and workplace investigations
Serve as escalation point for employee complaints and sensitive HR matters
Guide progressive discipline processes and documentation standards
Review, assess, and strengthen HR policies and procedures
Identify compliance gaps and employment law risks (California-focused)
Recommend updates to employee handbooks and HR frameworks
Support leadership in navigating complex or high-risk employee situations
Help establish consistency, structure, and defensibility in HR processes
Act as a trusted advisor to both HR and executive leadership
Required Qualifications
Open to fractional, consulting, interim, or project-based roles
Availability of approximately 8–20 hours per week
Experience in charter schools and K–12 education
10+ years of progressive HR experience
Strong employee relations and workplace investigations expertise
Deep knowledge of California employment law
Experience managing sensitive employee complaints and compliance issues
Background in HR policy development and handbook review
Preferred Qualifications
School district HR leadership experience
Multi-site or multi-campus HR experience
SHRM-SCP, SPHR, or equivalent senior HR certification
Former HR Director, CHRO, Chief People Officer, or senior HR consultant experience
Experience advising executive leadership teams on HR risk and strategy
