We are partnering with a well-established insurer to appoint an Insurance Risk Manager. This is a second-line specialist role within a Governance, Risk & Resilience function, with oversight responsibility across two insurance portfolios and exposure to senior governance and Board reporting.

The Role

This is a second-line risk position with oversight responsibility across two insurance portfolios reporting into a senior risk leader and engaging regularly with actuarial, underwriting, and claims functions.
The position plays a key role in maintaining independent risk oversight and supporting sound decision making at both management and Board level.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain and enhance the insurance risk framework, including risk appetite metrics and monitoring methodology
• Ensure ongoing alignment with APRA prudential standards
• Provide independent second-line oversight across underwriting, pricing, reserving, claims, and reinsurance risk
• Review and challenge actuarial assessments, including reserve adequacy and claims development
• Monitor loss ratios, claims trends, and emerging risk indicators across both portfolios
• Assess exposure to external risk drivers, including claims inflation, demographic change, and the medico-legal environment
• Deliver clear, concise risk reporting and insights for management and the Board Risk Committee
• Develop and maintain dashboards and KRIs to support sound decision-making
• Partner with actuarial, underwriting, claims, and finance teams to provide independent oversight and challenge

Candidate Requirements

• 4–7 years' experience in insurance risk, actuarial, underwriting, or a related technical role
• Strong technical knowledge across underwriting, pricing, reserving, and claims
• Sound understanding of APRA-regulated environments and relevant prudential standards
• Tertiary qualifications in Actuarial Studies, Finance, Commerce, Statistics, or a related discipline
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex concepts clearly to non-specialist audiences
• Strong analytical skills and proficiency in Excel

Desirable

• Experience in general insurance, medical indemnity, or health insurance
• Line 2 risk experience; strong Line 1 insurance technical experience also considered
• Professional qualifications such as FIAA, ANZIIF, RMIA, CA, or equivalent
• Exposure to reserving, pricing, or claims risk analysis; experience with GRC systems advantageous
