Job Overview:

The Connected Manufacturing & Field Service Engineer plays a critical role in supporting, integrating, and optimizing Precision Fastening Tools, Controllers, and Connected Manufacturing solutions within customer production environments. This position serves as the technical liaison between customers, service teams, and engineering organizations, ensuring reliable operation, seamless system integration, and exceptional customer satisfaction.

The engineer will be responsible for installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, testing, and support of fastening systems and related manufacturing technologies. This includes integration with Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), PLCs, industrial networks, and digital I/O interfaces.

Through direct customer engagement and hands-on technical expertise, the Connected Manufacturing & Field Service Engineer helps drive operational excellence, product reliability, and continuous improvement while supporting Ingersoll Rand's commitment to making life better through innovative manufacturing solutions.


Responsibilities

Field Service & Customer Support

  • Travel to customer facilities to install, commission, maintain, and troubleshoot precision fastening systems, controllers, and software solutions.
  • Provide onsite and remote technical support for customers, distributors, and internal service teams.
  • Diagnose and resolve software, hardware, networking, and process-related issues in production environments.
  • Conduct equipment assessments and recommend corrective actions to improve system performance and uptime.
  • Deliver customer training on product operation, software functionality, troubleshooting, and best practices.
  • Support production launch activities and ensure successful implementation of connected manufacturing solutions.

Connected Manufacturing & Systems Integration

  • Ensure reliable wired & wireless communication between fastening tools and controllers.
  • Support integration & troubleshooting of communication between IR products and plant MES systems using open protocols like Power Focus Open Protocol (PFOP) and ToolsNet, and proprietary protocols for Ford, Volkswagen, Toyota, Stellantis and more.
  • Verify traceability, production reporting, recipe management, and quality data collection requirements.
  • Collaborate with customer automation, IT, quality, and manufacturing engineering teams to ensure reliable system performance.
  • Support Industry 4.0 and Smart Factory initiatives through deployment of connected manufacturing solutions.

Digital I/O & Automation Support

  • Configure and troubleshoot digital I/O communications between fastening controllers, PLCs, conveyors, robots, and automation equipment.
  • Verify machine interlocks, cycle complete signals, fault outputs, part-present inputs, and process control functions.
  • Support industrial communication protocols including Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Modbus, and OPC-UA.
  • Assist with factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), and production startup support.

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify recurring field issues and provide feedback to engineering and product management teams.
  • Support the development of service procedures, technical documentation, and best practices.
  • Stay current on manufacturing technology trends, industrial automation, and connected factory solutions.
  • Mentor service technicians and junior engineers as needed.

Requirements:

  • 5+ Years of experience with MES with power tools communicating with PFOP
  • 5+ Years of experience with Digital I/O configuration and troubleshooting
  • 5+ Years of experience with Fieldbus communications with Profinet or EthernetIP
  • 5+ Years of experience with Software installation and validation
  • 5+ Years of experience with Configuring devices for Wi-Fi communications & troubleshooting

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Joints, fasteners, power tools
  • Must be very comfortable with customer interaction! Will have a sales incentive bonus.
  • Exposure to industrial automation with OPC-UA, MES and Fieldbus protocols
  • Experience with devices communicating over Zigbee or 802.15.4
  • Experience with mobile app communications with devices over BLE or USB
Travel & Work Arrangements/Requirements 
  • Regular Travel by car and plane to our customer sites in the US and Canada. Must have a valid passport or ability to get one. You will be provided with a company vehicle. 
Pay Range:
The total pay range for this role, not including incentive opportunities, is Min - 97000 - Max - 125000. The pay range takes into account a wide range of factors that include a candidate’s skills; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and geographic location.  Hired applicant will be eligible to receive (discretionary/nondiscretionary) annual bonuses and incentive compensation.
