Construction Project Director (Power Generation)

Apply directWe are seeking an experienced Project Director to lead the successful execution of complex energy infrastructure projects from initial planning through final commissioning and closeout. This role is responsible for the full project lifecycle across multiple technologies, including natural gas generation, utility-scale solar PV, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and hybrid energy solutions.
The ideal candidate combines strong engineering knowledge, construction leadership, project controls expertise, and executive-level stakeholder management to deliver projects safely, on schedule, and within budget.
Candidates should be based in the Dallas, TX area and be willing to travel to project sites throughout the U.S. as business needs require.
Key Responsibilities
Project Planning & Development
- Lead project planning from concept through execution, defining scope, feasibility, technical requirements, and delivery strategy.
- Partner with Engineering, Development, Operations, and external stakeholders to ensure constructability and project readiness.
- Perform constructability reviews, evaluate site logistics, and support commissioning planning.
- Coordinate permitting activities and utility interconnection efforts with regulatory agencies and AHJs.
Budgeting, Scheduling & Project Controls
- Develop and manage project CAPEX and OPEX budgets.
- Prepare detailed cost estimates, contingency plans, staffing forecasts, and project schedules.
- Track project performance against budget, schedule, quality, and HSE objectives.
- Provide accurate forecasting and executive-level reporting throughout the project lifecycle.
Procurement & Contract Management
- Lead procurement strategy for major equipment and subcontracted work.
- Prepare and manage RFPs for generators, transformers, switchgear, BESS systems, and other critical equipment.
- Evaluate vendor proposals, negotiate commercial terms, and execute project buyout while mitigating contractual risk.
Construction Execution
- Direct construction activities through field teams, superintendents, and subcontractors.
- Ensure all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with project specifications and quality standards.
- Coordinate manpower, equipment, materials, and subcontractor performance across multiple disciplines.
- Resolve project issues proactively while maintaining schedule and budget objectives.
Reporting & Stakeholder Management
- Maintain comprehensive project documentation, including schedules, financial reports, meeting minutes, and progress reports.
- Present project status, risks, mitigation strategies, and forecasts to executive leadership.
- Coordinate project turnover and closeout documentation to ensure seamless transition into operations.
Risk Management
- Identify and mitigate project risks related to schedule, permitting, procurement, constructability, and execution.
- Collaborate with Development, Engineering, Finance, Legal, OEMs, utilities, contractors, and other key stakeholders to ensure successful project delivery.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, or Industrial Engineering (Mechanical or Electrical Engineering preferred).
- 15+ years of construction project management experience within the energy, industrial, or infrastructure sectors.
- Proven success managing large, complex, multi-trade construction projects with significant mechanical and electrical scopes.
- Extensive experience leading projects through the complete lifecycle, from planning and pre-construction through commissioning and closeout.
- Strong understanding of:
- Construction estimating
- Procurement strategies
- Contract administration
- Project scheduling (Primavera P6, Microsoft Project)
- Budgeting and project controls
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience delivering:
- Natural gas generation projects (reciprocating engines or gas turbines)
- Utility-scale solar projects
- Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
- Data center infrastructure projects
- PMP certification or equivalent project management credential.
- Experience with EPC delivery models and subcontractor contract negotiations.
- Proficiency with Procore, Autodesk Construction Cloud, or similar construction management platforms.
