Lead Data Engineer

Location: Canberra (Hybrid)
Contract: Initial term to June 2027 + extensions
Start: June 2026

We are seeking experienced Lead Data Engineers to support large-scale data platform initiatives within a complex enterprise environment. This role focuses on building, maintaining, and optimising data pipelines and systems that enable advanced analytics, reporting, and decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and support ETL processes in a production environment
• Analyse and resolve data and system issues, including incident management
• Perform data profiling, system and impact analysis
• Contribute to database and data warehouse design
• Develop and maintain technical documentation (designs, workflows, specifications)
• Provide code reviews and ensure adherence to development and testing standards
• Deliver high-quality solutions aligned with enterprise architecture and security standards
• Collaborate with stakeholders to understand requirements and ensure data quality
• Support continuous improvement of data systems, tools, and processes
• Mentor team members and contribute to knowledge sharing

Required Experience

• Strong experience leading data engineering activities in large, complex environments
• Expertise in database design and data warehouse architecture
• Proven capability in data management strategy, governance, and standards
• Hands-on experience with data integration, including scripting and automation
• Ability to drive improvements across data platforms, tools, and processes

Desirable Skills

• 10+ years’ experience in ETL development
• Experience with enterprise data warehouse platforms (e.g. Teradata)
• Strong SQL and data analysis capability
• Experience with tools such as IBM DataStage, DB2, and UNIX-based scripting
• Solid understanding of SDLC, testing practices, and data governance

Working Arrangements

• Ongoing hybrid model

Additional Requirements

• Negative Vetting Level 1 security clearance
• Australian work rights required

You will contribute to a large-scale enterprise data environment, supporting the delivery of data to a wide range of users including analysts, data scientists, and business stakeholders. The role plays a key part in enabling data-driven insights and operational outcomes across the organisation.
