Position Summary
The Teacher for the Visually Impaired (TVI) provides specialized instructional services to students with visual impairments, including blindness and low vision, to support academic achievement, independence, and access to the educational environment. The TVI collaborates with students, families, teachers, related service providers, and school staff to ensure students receive appropriate accommodations, modifications, and instruction aligned with their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

The Teacher for the Visually Impaired (TVI) provides specialized instructional services to students with visual impairments, including blindness and low vision, to support academic achievement, independence, and access to the educational environment. The TVI collaborates with students, families, teachers, related service providers, and school staff to ensure students receive appropriate accommodations, modifications, and instruction aligned with their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide direct and consultative instructional services to students with visual impairments in individual and group settings.
- Assess students’ functional vision, learning media, and educational needs.
- Develop, implement, and monitor IEP goals and objectives related to visual impairment services.
- Adapt instructional materials into accessible formats, including Braille, large print, tactile graphics, and assistive technology.
- Teach Braille reading and writing skills, as appropriate.
- Instruct students in compensatory skills, organization, self-advocacy, and independent living skills.
- Collaborate with general education teachers, special education staff, orientation and mobility specialists, therapists, and administrators to support student success.
- Recommend and support the use of assistive technology and adaptive equipment.
- Monitor student progress and maintain accurate documentation and service records.
- Participate in IEP meetings, evaluations, and multidisciplinary team discussions.
- Provide training and guidance to school staff and families regarding visual impairments and accommodations.
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, district, and agency regulations and policies.
- Travel between school sites, as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, Education of the Visually Impaired, or related field.
- Valid state teaching certification/licensure in Visual Impairment or Teacher of the Visually Impaired.
- Knowledge of Braille, assistive technology, and instructional strategies for students with visual impairments.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
- Master’s degree in Education of the Visually Impaired or related field.
- Previous experience working in a school setting with students who are visually impaired.
- Experience with IEP development and case management.
- Knowledge of orientation and mobility concepts.
- Ability to travel between assigned school locations.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, and use standard office and classroom equipment.
- Ability to lift and carry instructional materials and adaptive equipment as needed.
