The Prototype Trim Technician (Seat Laboratory) is responsible for the precise cutting, sewing, and assembly of seat trim covers and contributes to the full prototype seat build process from component preparation through final assembly and evaluation.
Key Responsibilities
Trim Cover Cutting & Preparation
- Interpret patterns, engineering work instructions, and digital cutting layouts for seat trim components.
- Cut materials such as fabric, leather, vinyl, and composites using manual and automated cutting equipment.
- Inspect raw materials for defects, ensuring correct grain direction, color consistency, and orientation prior to cutting.
- Label, organize, and stage cut parts to support efficient workflow through sewing and assembly operations.
Sewing & Trim Cover Assembly
- Operate industrial sewing equipment (e.g., single-needle, double-needle, overlock, walking foot machines) to construct seat trim components.
- Assemble seams, top-stitching, and decorative elements in accordance with quality and durability standards.
- Apply foam, scrim, reinforcements, and other backing materials as specified in build requirements.
- Conduct in-process inspections to verify stitch quality, seam accuracy, and dimensional compliance.
Seat Build & Assembly
- Install finished trim covers onto seat structures including cushions, seat backs, headrests, and armrests.
- Assemble seat subcomponents such as frames, foam systems, trim covers, and hardware per engineering specifications.
- Use hand tools and power tools to complete mechanical and upholstery assembly tasks safely and accurately.
- Verify fit, finish, and functional performance of completed seat systems (e.g., recline mechanisms, adjusters, headrests).
Quality, Safety & Documentation
- Follow established work instructions, standard operating procedures, and quality standards for all trimming and assembly activities.
- Record production data, defects, and rework actions using designated tracking systems or documentation tools.
- Identify and escalate quality issues, equipment malfunctions, or process deviations in a timely manner.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and compliant work environment in accordance with 5S and EHS guidelines.
Continuous Improvement & Collaboration
- Provide feedback on patterns, tooling, and assembly methods to support continuous improvement in quality and efficiency.
- Support prototype builds, engineering trials, and design changes for new seat programs and materials.
- Collaborate closely with engineering, quality, and production teams to resolve build issues and implement best practices.
Minimum Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in seat trim sewing, upholstery, automotive interiors, furniture upholstery, or closely related manufacturing environments.
- Demonstrated ability to cut and sew complex trim patterns to tight tolerances.
- Experience assembling upholstered products or seat systems from component parts through finished assemblies.
Skills & Competencies
Technical Skills
- Proficiency operating industrial sewing machines and related upholstery equipment (cutters, skivers, binders, sergers).
- Ability to read and interpret patterns, technical drawings, work instructions, and digital layout files.
- Familiarity with manufacturing systems and tools such as:
- Pattern or nesting software (e.g., Optitex or equivalent)
- HMI interfaces for production tracking and work order management
- Basic quality and reporting systems
Quality & Craftsmanship
- Strong attention to detail in stitching, seam alignment, and overall finish quality.
- Ability to self-inspect work and correct defects at the source.
Problem Solving & Collaboration
- Ability to identify fit, finish, and functional issues and collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, quality, and production teams.
- Strong communication skills in a team-based manufacturing environment.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, bend, and reach for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and maneuver seat components and materials within safe handling limits.
