Apply directA Global Financial firm is seeking an Observability Lead Engineer to lead the Tokyo-based TOM (Telemetry, Observability & Monitoring) Engineering team within Group Platform Services & Engineering. This role is responsible for the design, engineering, integration, and strategic direction of the Observability platform across Asia and Retail operations.
The ideal candidate will come from a development background to build the tools and platform but will also have strong, enthusiastic communication skills, as a technical evangelist, to influence stakeholders across the organization and drive buy-in & adoption
Working within a newly formed global team of engineers and SREs, the successful candidate will help drive the evolution toward AI Ops capabilities, including automated anomaly detection, root cause analysis, and ML-driven operational insights.
The role focuses on Observability technologies including Grafana, Loki, Mimir, Tempo, OpenTelemetry, and Linux-based platforms, while collaborating closely with global engineering teams to deliver scalable enterprise-wide monitoring solutions.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the team of Japanese Engineers responsible for introducing leading edge observability tools. Part of the global group wide Observability team.
- Engineer solutions for adoption of best practices in Observability and Monitoring by companies within the Nomura Group
- Propose, design, and implement additions to evolve observability platform
- Drive adoption of best practices in Observability across the organization
- Contribute to Observability standards and procedures
- Working with the SRE team to optimize the operation model
- Mentor engineers on best practices, standards and procedures
- Reporting to Group Head of Observability
Required Skills:
- +10 years overall experience including background in application development. (Not infrastructure background).
- Team lead experience (7+ Years)
- Java, Python and Scripting Experience (5+ years)
- Intermediate knowledge of Linux
- Experience of the Observability principles and the Grafana toolset
- Agile experience with use of JIRAs and sprints
- Strong communication - presenting and documentation
- Experience of driving change in a large organization
- Demonstrate understanding of large enterprise systems & technologies on which they are built
- Solid understanding of Production Support processes
- In-depth understanding of Java and Python

Working Hours: 08:40 – 17:40
Workstyle: By principle, it will be 1 day working in office, 4 days working from home (Depending on nature of the job, it will be decided by department head)
