Ecologist (Consultant)

Overview

We’re working with a growing ecological consultancy that is looking to appoint an Ecologist to join its expanding terrestrial team. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with consultancy experience who seeks greater project ownership, exposure to a wide range of sectors, and a clear progression pathway towards a Senior Ecologist role.

Responsibilities

As an Ecologist, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality ecological services across a diverse range of projects. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading habitat and protected species surveys.
  • Conducting UK Habitat Classification and Phase 1 surveys.
  • Preparing Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs) and protected species reports.
  • Analyzing survey data and producing mapping outputs using GIS.
  • Managing smaller projects from initial survey stages through to reporting.
  • Liaising directly with clients and multidisciplinary teams to ensure project success.
  • Supporting fee proposals and tender submissions.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A relevant degree in ecology or environmental science.
  • Proven experience within UK ecological consultancy.
  • Strong botanical and protected species knowledge.
  • Proficiency in report writing, including PEAs.
  • A solid understanding of UK wildlife legislation.
  • Membership of CIEEM or eligibility for membership.
  • A full UK driving license and flexibility for travel within the UK.

Desirable qualifications and experience include:

  • Holding protected species licenses.
  • Proficiency in NVC survey skills.
  • Experience as an Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW).
  • GIS mapping capability.

Day-to-Day

Your daily activities will involve a mix of fieldwork, project management, and client interaction. You will:

  • Conduct ecological surveys and assessments.
  • Analyze data and create detailed ecological reports.
  • Collaborate with clients and multidisciplinary teams to integrate ecological considerations into project designs.
  • Manage smaller projects, ensuring timely and high-quality delivery.
  • Contribute to tender submissions and fee proposals.
