POSITION DESCRIPTION — UNIX Platform Analyst

Location: Sydney (Macquarie Park) – Hybrid 3 days per week in office

Employment Type: Permanent

Salary: $130,000 – $150,000 + Super


About the Role

The UNIX Platform Analyst supports the stability, security, and performance of enterprise UNIX/Linux platforms through hands-on operational support, structured change execution, and proactive monitoring.

This role is suited to a technically capable platform professional who enjoys operational ownership and is developing toward more advanced engineering and automation responsibilities. Working closely with senior engineers, operations teams, and vendors, you will help ensure reliable platform services while contributing to continuous improvement and platform uplift initiatives.

A strong background in IRIX is a key requirement for this role. Candidates with hands-on IRIX administration experience are strongly encouraged to apply.


Key Responsibilities

Platform Operations & Reliability Support day-to-day operations of UNIX/Linux platforms to ensure availability, performance, and security. Respond to incidents and service requests within agreed SLAs, providing clear, accurate technical updates. Perform routine monitoring, health checks, and operational maintenance activities. Identify emerging issues and escalate patterns or risks to senior engineers in a timely manner.

Change & Configuration Management Implement approved platform and configuration changes in line with established change control processes. Validate changes to ensure compliance with operational, security, and governance standards. Assist with platform lifecycle activities including patch validation, deployment, and service upgrades.

Automation & Continuous Improvement Develop and maintain scripts (e.g. Bash, Python) to automate routine operational tasks and configuration checks. Identify opportunities for automation, standardisation, and process optimisation. Contribute to platform modernisation and uplift initiatives under guidance from senior engineers.

Security, Compliance & Resilience Support vulnerability remediation, patching cycles, and configuration validation activities. Assist with disaster recovery preparation, documentation, and testing activities. Ensure adherence to organisational security policies, governance standards, and audit requirements.

Collaboration & Knowledge Sharing Work closely with UNIX Platform Engineers, Cloud, Network, Cybersecurity, and Operations teams. Act as an escalation point for Helpdesk and Operations teams within defined scope. Maintain accurate documentation, runbooks, and knowledge base articles. Participate in the UNIX Platform on-call roster as required.


Skills & Experience

Required: 2+ years' experience in a UNIX/Linux platform, infrastructure, or enterprise systems support role. Strong hands-on IRIX administration experience is essential. Hands-on experience supporting UNIX/Linux environments, including installation, configuration, and patching. Experience monitoring and troubleshooting systems to maintain performance and availability. Working knowledge of scripting for automation (Bash and/or Python). Understanding of change control, incident management, and operational best practices. Awareness of security principles and compliance requirements in enterprise environments. Strong communication skills with the ability to provide clear technical updates to stakeholders.

Desirable: Experience with AIX, IBM Power (LPARs), or enterprise storage platforms. Exposure to cloud or hybrid environments (AWS and/or Azure). Experience supporting databases, middleware, or web services on UNIX/Linux platforms. Familiarity with ITSM tools such as ServiceNow. Exposure to incident analysis, RCA, or platform uplift projects.


Qualifications

Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent experience.

UNIX/Linux certifications such as IBM Certified System Administrator – AIX, RHCSA / LPIC-1, and IRIX System Administration. ITIL v4 Foundation is desirable.

Highly regarded: RHCE / LPIC-2, IBM Advanced AIX certifications, IRIX Advanced Administration, InterSystems IRIS administration certification, and entry-level cloud or security certifications (AWS/Azure Fundamentals, Security+).
